MACSI-NET, A NETWORK WITH ACADEMIC AS WELL AS INDUSTRIAL NODES, IS DEVOTED TO PROMOTE THE USE OF MATHEMATICAL MODELS, COMPUTING AND SIMULATION IN INDUSTRY.

TO THIS END IT ORGANISES ACTIVITIES (MEETINGS, WORKSHOPS, ETC) TO INCREASE AWARENESS IN BOTH ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY OF THE POTENTIAL OF MATHEMATICS AND SIMULATION, AND ALSO TO STIMULATE COOPERATION.

MAthematics, Computing and Simulation for Industry

It is apparent that the industry is meeting ever more challenging problems, which should be solved by using state of the art mathematical and computational tools. Academic institutions often have the qualities and expertise to be of great help in this. However, enterprises often do not know how to find the proper academic partners, in particular in mathematical areas. On the other hand academic institutes are still not sufficiently aware of the importance of taking up their role in a joint tackling of both smaller and larger problems that may help Europe's industry to maintain or achieve a competitive edge in a variety of areas.

MACSI-net is therefore set up as a network where both enterprises and university institutions co-operate to solve these problems, to their mutual benefit. In particular the network focuses on strategies to increase the interaction between industry and academia in order to

  • help industry (in particular SME) with advanced mathematical and computational tools
  • increase awareness of academia of industrial needs.

The network is multidisciplinary, combining the power of mathematics, scientific computing and engineering, for modelling and simulation
The network should achieve its goals through

  • Strategic meetings with industries about well specified topics
  • Summer courses
  • Workshops
  • Visits of experts
  • Foundation of special (interest) groups
  • Funding and appointment of post docs
  • Activity committees who actively look for funded proposals from EU or other bodies

The original network was set up by a joint effort of ECCOMAS (European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences) and ECMI (European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry). MACSI-net has successfully applied for support at the EU and is recognised as a "Network of Excellence". It is open by principle (see Nodes and Members, in about us).

The Network has a Strategy Board for long term objectives, with distinguished people from industry and academia as its members. At the moment it is cochaired by Dr Estola (Nokia, Finland) and prof Neunzert (ITWM, Germany). The daily policy is steered by the executive committee, chaired by the co-ordinator of the network.

The various nodes will each bring in general and specific expertise in areas of mathematics and computing. Their role may be different for different expertise areas. The role of industrial nodes is somewhat complementary to the academic ones. The network is aiming at dissemination of ideas, models and algorithms to their mutual benefit. It may lead to joint research efforts and forging of (often thinly spread) local initiatives. In particular future joint research proposals are expected to make this network attractive for all involved.
